Electronic Bilge Switch - Sentinel One Star

The smart bilge switch solves the annoying problem of water in the bilge, even when you're away from the boat. It can be installed outside the bilge and automatically activates the pump when water reaches its sensors, turning it off as soon as the problem is resolved.

In 2010 they began designing the SENTINEL ONE STAR switch, which led to it being awarded the prestigious Dame Award in 2011.

Sentinel's operation is very simple: when powered, it goes into standby mode. When the water level reaches the sensors and wets them simultaneously for at least 30 seconds, Sentinel activates the pump. It then automatically deactivates after 15 seconds when one of the two sensors is no longer watered.

Two stainless steel plates ( P1 ), ( P2 ) act as sensors:

  • One is mounted vertically on the pump body by fixing it with two plastic cable ties ( FF1 ) and connecting it to the brown cable
  • One on the outlet pipe using two plastic clamps ( FF2 ), this must be bent at approximately 90°, so that the cable lug ( c ) remains higher than the lower part ( l ) of the other plate.

The P1 plate functions as an on and off intervention level.
When the liquid reaches it, after 30 seconds, Sentinel turns on the pump.

When it becomes uncovered by the liquid, Sentinel keeps the pump running for another 15 seconds and then turns it off.

Key aspects to consider about Sentinel:

  • The electronics are installed wherever you prefer.
  • The electronics are not located inside the bilge, so they will never come into contact with dirt or oxidizing agents.
  • There are no moving mechanical parts that can jam.

The constraints to take into consideration are:

  • The distance between the sensors must not exceed 30 cm.
  • The length of the cables from the switch to the sensors must not exceed 15 m.
  • The switch will not trigger the pump if fuel and oil leaks are present.
